Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velázquez was born in 1599 in Seville, Spain. He was a painter of both Kings and Popes. Today his art hangs in museums around the world.
In addition to his many official portraits, Velázquez painted during his last years, two of his most original figure compositions and greatest masterpieces. Las Hilanderas, a genre scene in a tapestry factory, is at the same time an illustration of the ancient Greek fable of the spinning contest.
